Join GPE

Interested in joining Global Partners in Education? We are always happy to explore new partnerships with institutions of higher education outside of the U.S. Please contact the Chair of the GPE Secretariat at to set up a virtual meeting to discuss. In the meantime, here are some FAQs you may want to consider.

  • Is there a fee associated with GPE membership?
Yes. There is an annual membership fee for GPE. For Full Membership, the fee is $1000 per year. There is also a mechanism in place to petition for a fee reduction due to exigent circumstances.
  • I think I’m interested, but I’m not sure if it is a good fit for my institution. Can I try it out first?
Yes. We encourage all potential new partners to “pilot” at least one semester of the Global Understanding Course before committing to become a partner. No fees are required during the piloting phase.
  • Can I, as an individual, join GPE?
No, GPE is a membership organization consisting of institutions of higher education. While we may have one individual as a primary contact, the partnership itself is with the institution and requires institutional support.
  • Can US based institutions become members?
No. Currently, East Carolina University is the only U.S. based institutional member in GPE. New membership is limited to institutions outside of the U.S.
  • As a GPE partner, what do I have to commit to?
All Full Members must commit to offering a Global Understanding Course at least once per semester. There is also an associate membership level which requires offering a Global Understanding course at least once every two years. Beyond that, members are welcome to participate as much or as little as they like in any other GPE initiatives/programs.
  • How do you handle time-zones and different academic calendars?
GPE activities are centrally scheduled to ensure they fit within your academic calendars and take into account your holidays, exam periods, etc. Full semester courses are offered within specific time frames to maximize partner availability and allow us to work synchronously. We typically offer classes between 8:00 – 11:00 am EDT/EST and 8:00 – 10:00 pm EDT/EST.
  • Do we need to / can we sign a Memorandum of Understanding?
Yes. All institutions officially joining Global Partners in Education must first sign a general MOU with ECU (as the managing body) and then a more specific MOA agreeing to participate in GPE.
